Elton John: Candle In The Wind

Marilyn Monroe in Palm Springs

While I was in Palm Springs visiting with my cousin to see him act in a play, I came across this stunning statue of Marilyn Monroe and it immediately reminded me of Elton John's song, Candle In The Wind. This 26 foot tall and 34,000 pound statue will be leaving Palm Springs, California and heading to Hamilton, N.J. in April. I'm glad I got to see it while it was close by.

Monday Music Quote: Elton John

"Goodbye Norma Jean. Though I never knew you at all, you had the grace to hold yourself while those around you crawled."

Wikipedia Says

"Candle in the Wind" is a song with music and lyrics by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. It was originally written in 1973, in honour of Marilyn Monroe, who had died 11 years earlier.
In 1997, John performed a rewritten version of the song as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales. This version of the song was released as a single and reached No. 1 in many countries, proving a much greater success than the original, officially being listed as the second best-selling single of all time.

Loneliness was tough, the toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar and pain was the price you paid
And even when you died, oh, the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say was that Marilyn was found in the nude

Goodbye Norma Jean, though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself while those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean, from a young man in the twenty second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual, more than just our Marilyn Monroe

Takin' It To The Streets: Doobie Brothers

Photo of The Doobie Brothers from the front row

Take this message to my brother
                                                    You will find him everywhere
                                                   Wherever people live together
                                                         Tied in poverty's despair

Takin' It To The Streets was written in 1976. The words and music are by Michael McDonald, one of my favorite musicians. I love this moderately fast song. Here are the chords that I have highlighted in red. You'll find some simple chord charts on line but I think this one is pretty easy to learn. I'm a Doobie fan... are you?

Learn To Play: IF

David Gates, Songwriter

David Ashworth Gates (born December 11, 1940) is an American singer-songwriter, best known as the lead singer of the group Bread, which reached the tops of the musical charts in Europe and North America on several occasions in the 1970s. The band was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. One of my favorite songs that is so soothing and picturesque is called IF. Remember the group, Bread and I wondered... do you have a favorite hit song from them?

This one is played slowly with lots of arpeggiated, broken chords in the left hand.
