Fred E. Ahlert: I'll Get By

LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 04: Singer Dame Shirle...
LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 04: Singer Dame Shirley Bassey performs on stage during the Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace on June 4, 2012 in London, England. For only the second time in its history the UK celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of a monarch. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the throne. Thousands of well-wishers from around the world have flocked to London to witness the spectacle of the weekend’s celebrations. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

Fred Ahlert was one of the most talented and most prolific composers of the century. Roy Turk one of the truly great lyricists. Published in 1928, this evergreen enjoyed sheet music sales and record sales of over a million copies each. It was revived in 1944 with a #1 recording by the Harry James orchestra with Dick Haymes on vocal, and in 1961 vocalist Shirley Bassey had a successful recording. It was included in a half dozen films from 1930 to 1957. Are you familiar with the song?

I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)

Piano House, Profile Tree.com

Another Albert/Turk hit, I Don't Know Why (I Just Do). Wayne King and his orchestra popularized this 1931 ballad. Their super-sweet style endeared them to the "over 50" crowd, and earned them a weekly radio show sponsored by a cosmetic company for "older ladies." It wasn't long before The Lady Esther serenade became one of the top radio programs, and King was earning #15,000 a week!

Music by Fred E. Ahlert
Words by Roy Turk
Verse:
All day long you're ask -ing me What I see in you, All day long I'm an -swer -ing, But what good does it do?
I have noth -ing to ex -plain, I just love you, love you, And I'll tell you once a -gain:

Chorus:
I Don't Know Why I love you like I do, I Don't Know Why, I just do.
I Don't Know Why you thrill me like you do, I Don't Know Why, you just do.

In 1995 Randy Newman wrote the words and music to a song, Feels Like Home. The tempo is moderately slow with 4/4 time signature, played in the Key of D. Here is the chord chart to this special song.
