Walking On Broken Glass: Annie Lennox

Walking on Broken Glass: Annie Lennox

"Walking on Broken Glass" is a song written and performed by Scottish singer Annie Lennox, taken from her 1992 album, Diva. This song reached #1 in Canada, #8 in the United Kingdom and Ireland and #14 in the United States singles charts. for more information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org

It's a cute song with a moderately fast rhythm in C Major with 4/4 time signature. Another popular song from this artist is Sweet Dreams Are Made of This. I had read that Annie Lennox started playing the flute at 17 in the Royal Academy of Music in London and now she is a very successful solo artist!

You were the sweetest thing that I ever knew
                                                   C                           G  Am
But I don't care for sugar honey if I can't have you.
                         C
Since you've abandoned me
 Fadd9                    C          G/B
My whole life has crashed
 Em                         F
Won't you pick the pieces up
                                            G                        C  C/E  F  C/E  F C/E G
'Cause it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass...

But it don't mean nothing to me.
O-o-oh let the rain come down
 C
Let the wind blow through me...

I'm living in an empty room
 Fadd9                         C             G/B
With all the windows smashed
 C
And I've got so little left to lose
 C/G        G                                                   C  C/E  F  C/E  F  C/E  G
That it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass...
(Walking on walking on broken glass)

 Dm9                        Bb           F
And if you're trying to cut me down
You know that I might bleed.
C /F        B     Am/F
'Cause if you're trying to cut me down
I know that you'll succeed...
And if you want to hurt me
There's nothing left to fear
'Cause if you want to hurt me
C/F     B   Gsus4              G
You do it really well my dear...

Now everyone of us was made to suffer
Everyone of us is made to weep
We've been hurting one another
And now the pain has cut too deep...
So take me from the wreckage
Save me from the blast
Lift me up and take me back
Don't let me keep on walking...
Walking on broken glass.
Don't let me keep on walking.

The Carpenters were such a great brother and sister pop singing duo. I loved Karen Carpenter's voice and this particular song, Close To You has a lot of eighth notes and is played with a swing feel. We've Only Just Begun is another favorite with the baby boomer generation.

Here are a few chord charts in different key signatures to Close To You.

Also, a great CD of the Carpenter's  Love Songs is available on amazon.

As I mentioned earlier, I love the peacefulness of this artist's voice but the tragic ending to her life still lingers with me. I hope and pray that anyone struggling with self esteem issues, along with eating disorders, will seek professional help and know that you are deeply loved by family friends and a Savior, Jesus Christ who is always close to you.
