If you should find you miss the sweet
And tender love we used to share
Just come back to the places where we used to go,
And I'll be there

famous song. Listen to the horns! :-)

When Dionne Warwick sings this beautiful song, it stays with me always. It is one of the best songs
of the 60s.

The Carpenters were such a great brother and sister pop singing duo. I loved Karen Carpenter's voice and this particular song, Close To You has a lot of eighth notes and is played with a swing feel. We've Only Just Begun is another favorite with the baby boomer generation.

Here are a few chord charts in different key signatures to Close To You.

As I mentioned earlier, I love the peacefulness of this artist's voice but the tragic ending to her life still lingers with me. I hope and pray that anyone struggling with self esteem issues, along with eating disorders, will seek professional help and know that you are deeply loved by family friends and a Savior, Jesus Christ who is always close to you.

Monday Music Quote: Groovin'

Groovin'
"Groovin'" is a single released in 1967 by The Young Rascals that became a number one hit and one of the group's signature songs.

Written by group members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati and with a lead vocal from Cavaliere, it is indeed a slow, relaxed groove, based on Cavaliere's newfound interest in Afro-Cuban music. Instrumentation included a conga, harmonica, and an effective, Cuban-based bass guitar line from ace session musician Chuck Rainey.

Monday Music Quote: Michael Stipe

SAN FRANCISCO - SEPTEMBER 09: Apple CEO Steve...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
 Mind Versus Music:

Listening to tunes has plenty of benefits-but helping kids memorize isn't one of them, say researchers from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. Students were more likely to recall a list of letters in a specific order that they'd memorized in silence than a list they'd studied with music on-regardless of whether or not they liked the songs. For a boost, you might want to consider having kids use their iPods before a big test or competition; research suggests it may actually improve some kinds of performance.

"I've been looking at the iPod- the Apple iPod. One of the interesting things about the iPod, one of the things that people love most about it is not the technology; it's the box it comes in."

-- Donald Norman

"My iPod that was programmed by Peter Buck. It has 7,000 songs hand-picked for me by him. "

Funny Piano Songs (Mario Theme, Titanic, Jurrasic Park, Peanuts etc.)

TitanicImage by The Pop-up Kingdom via Flickr
Sometimes you just have to play the songs that you love and are good at playing. You just might find yourself on a roll like this person in the video. It is good to combine a medley of fun pop songs that have been famous and played by many. So many songs here are my favorites as well. Do you have a special song that you are fond of? Why not play it over and over and get real good at it and polish it up for others to hear as well. They say repetition is a good thing and I agree!

Funny Piano Songs (Mario Theme, Titanic, Jurrasic Park, Peanuts etc.)

Jurrasic Park

1,000 Miles

Peanuts Theme

Mario Theme

Theme form Charlie Brown

Titanic

Pirates of the Carribean

The person in the video is playing the piano by ear. With practice it becomes easier to transition into the next song. Get comfortable playing in a certain key and learn a medley of popular songs in that key. Themes from famous movies, pop stars and game videos is a great beginning to learning the piano. Music should be enjoyable wouldn't you agree?

All the best,

Since the mid-70's, Spyro Gyra's infectious and danceable take on pop-jazz has made them one of the more successful practitioners of the genre. Skillfully incorporating aspects of R&B, rock, and Caribbean music into their sound, the band's music is lively, infectious, and 9significantly) very accessible - albums such as morning Dance, Freetime, and In Modern Times are amongst the most popular jazz releases of the past two decades. Good to Go-Go, the ensemble's fourth disc for Heads Up, was praised as one of their strongest collections.

Saxophonist Jay Beckstein founded Spyro Gyra in 1974 and has remained its guiding force in the ensuing three-plus decades, writing much of the group's material and providing continuity throughout a handful of roster shifts. I love this group! What about you... do you have a favorite? My piano students continue to play John Mayer's songs also. He is very talented as well as a great singer/song writer, too.

Thanks for stopping by.
I hope you enjoy your stay at Piano Diana.

How To Play Single Ladies by Beyonce

Beyonce - Concert in Barcelona in 2007Image via Wikipedia
I found a great article about Beyonce's Single Ladies song that I wanted to share with you!
Here's a bit of it:

"To start, let’s take a look at the groove. In pop music, there is almost always some kind of clap, snap, or snare on beats 2 and 4, also known as a back beat (read my post on back beat options here). “Single Ladies” breaks the mold, especially for a pop song, with claps on every 8th note, which gives the song an uptempo-feel. In fact, to me these claps give the song more of a “1 feel” rather than strictly 4/4, which would mean every quarter note is an equally strong beat. Normally only beats 1 and, to a lesser extent, 3, are considered strong beats. Strong and weak beats become important when understanding how melodies and chord changes affect perceived key signature or tonality. This “1 feel” theory is reinforced by the dancing in the music video, in which the choreography consists largely of Beyoncé jolting around on every beat."

Chord chart
1st Measure: B (no3), A-/C, G#+/3 (no+5), C (no3)
2nd Measure: B (no3), A (no3), Amaj7 (no3), A-6 (no3)
